Senior Men Premier 3 (Finished 1st)
CHAMPIONS !!
For the first time in (far too many) years, Whitby are the Champions of the Regional 3 Mens grade, for the Pre-Xmas 2011/12 season.
An impressive tally of 44 points from six convincing victories and one narrow defeat handed the title to Whitby, winning the grade by a
clear 7 points from nearest rivals Lower Hutt.
A fantastic all-team performance throughout the last seven weeks was capped off with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Avalon, avenging last
season’s loss to the same team, with stand-out player of the season, Jake continuing his unbeaten run of all 7 singles & 7 doubles matches
with two further, comfortable straight sets wins.
A well earned break over Christmas beckons now, with the prospects of the Regional 2 promotion grade starting up again for the boys at the
end of January. As well as the prospects of Whitby Tennis possibly having two further teams in Regional tennis, with both the Womens Grade 1
team and the Mens Grade 1 team all set to secure promotion to Premier 3 for next year.

Senior Men Grade 1 (Finished 2nd)
A very pleasing 2nd place and promotion to Premier 3 next year.
Having played in the Wgtn competition for 10 years this was the closest grade I've played in
with many 4-2 or 3-3 matches. A single loss in the first round was the difference between us winning the grade and 2nd. We had a very tense
last match but actually came away with 5-1 win to ensure promotion.
The team was - Glenn Johnston, Rob Gracie who won every match even with a sprained ankle. Darryn Tinney (up from Mens 2) who also won all
but 2 games. Kane Chapman and Matt Rowe shared the number 1 spot and had some very tough matches with some good wins, particularly on the
last day with crucial wins in the doubles and singles.
It was a true team effort for this good result.

Senior Men Grade 2 (Finished 6th)
Not such a success this start to the season as last year as we did not finish high enough to compete in Men’s 1, however the team enjoyed the matches
we played.
We ended up 6th out of the 9 teams competing. We encountered some really stiff competition in the initial rounds of the draw coming up
against Miramar and Kilbirnie who finished first and second respectively however managed to hold our own after that.
We all felt we could have done better than this and plan to improve our showing in the second half of the season.

Senior Men Grade 6 (Currently 2nd)
We ended the pre Christmas season in second, but with a game in hand over the leading team as the Men's 6 does not have a pre Christmas result.
So we are well placed to have a crack at top spot in the post Christmas matches.
The doubles pairings of Pete and Matt / Mike and Phil both gelled well as between us we won 75% of our doubles matches.
Singles were not so successful as we only won 54% of our matches.
In terms of matches won our most successful players were Pete and Phil who both won 70% of their matches, whilst our newly promoted
number 1 (Matt) struggled with his new found status and only won 50% of his games.
As usual the games were very sociable with lots of "friendly" banter between ourselves and the opposition, with lots of "just out, unlucky mate"
comments heard throughout the matches.
In terms of the bad, we almost had a fight develop over a disputed line call with only the intervention of our "peace-maker" (Pete) stopping this
from escalating. But you could argue that was the highlight of the season with the entertainment it provided for the rest of the team.
So to sum up, an entertaining pre Christmas season with some good (and some not so good) tennis being played, but as always very
competitive - Here's hoping we can finish top at the end of the season.
